It is a 24-hour saliva test done in the convenience of your own home. Saliva samples are taken in the morning, noon, dinner and at bedtime. The reason you need to look at all four times and why saliva is better than blood testing is the fact that cortisol levels move or cycle in a 24 hour period. If one reading was done in the morning or afternoon...without taking into consideration the normal levels at the time, which is often done with a one time blood draw. You may not get the full picture. Your levels may be high or low in the morning or afternoon and Low at night or visaversa. This is why 4 saliva samples are much more accurate.
Why saliva over blood is cost. It is much easier to get four saliva samples in a day...than 4 blood draws. Secondly, most blood draws look at both the inactive and active levels and provide a Total number. Whereas saliva samples only look at the important 'active' component of the hormone.
