Hello Dr. Lopez…I have been feeling really bad for along time. When I was under a lot of stress do to health and family problems I noticed that my neck was swollen.
I went to my doctor and he ran a test on my thyroid. I was sent to have an ultra sound and a MRI with the iodine. A nodule and a goiter were found. I also had a full blood test panel done which was perfect except low on vitamin D.
Is it anything that you could recommend that I try to feel better? And to help with this goiter? I purchased a raw thyroid supplement to see if it might help. I have also gained a lot of weight especially in the stomach area. So far my doctor has not prescribed anything. I am post menopausal do; you think that I could try dhea? I feel miserable and am looking for anything that could help.
Your problems could be coming from so many different areas, so to suggest DHEA, without knowing if your DHEA levels are low is Not the smartest thing to do. The fact that you feel miserable suggests that there are probably other symptoms that could give us a hint or direction as to what is at the root of your problem. Your goal should be to identify what is causing the problem. It may be one thing, but it could also be a series of things. Let me suggest you take our "online Health Quizzes" to help narrow down where your problem is rooted in. Depending on what your results tell you, should be a good indicator as to where you should start. Could digestion be your problem? Is blood sugar imbalances contributing to the problem? Is stress or adrenal fatigue to blame? What about rest, sleep, exercise, sunshine???? The reason I ask these questions, is because that is how you address the true cause of your problem.
Hope that helps, you might want to set up a consultation in order to get some directions as to what to do.
I have hypothyroidism and I have been taken Synthroid for the last 4 years, 100/day. Recently, I feel very exhausted, and need to sleep for many hours and still feel restless, I have muscle stifness and feel somehow depressed. I got Thyrosense to try and it says that each capsule has 50 mcg of iodine. Would that cause any reaction with my medication?
Two things to think about. One is the fact that you are taking a synthetic medications that isn't working, which means it may not be your thyroid which is at the root of your problem. Or secondly, your body is not repsonding very well to a synthetic hormone.
I would say over 90% of my thyroid patients have an adrenal problem that is pulling the thyroid down. Unfortunately mainstream medicine doesn't bother to look at the adrenal glands...probably because there isn't a medication to give you for adrenal fatigue. On the other hand, Synthroid has been one of the top ten drugs for the last 25 years. Is that because everyone has a thyroid problem, or because mainstream medicine only looks for thyroid problems, because they have a medication for it.
My advice would be try Armour thyroid or Westroid. They are natural thyroid hormones, NOT snythetic. I would also educate yourself on the differences between T-3 and T-4 hormones. One is the active form and the other is the inactive. I have written a lot about it in my blog and also on the article...you can find in the Resource Section.
More importantly, based on your symptoms I would have your adrenals measured to see if that is truly at the root of your problem. Begin with our "Online Health Quizzes" and depending on how well you do with several of those tests, I would also do the 24 hour saliva test, which accurately measures adrenal function.

I have two questions. As background info, I became hypothyroid (Hashimoto's Disease) and Type 1 Diabetic when I had a serious reaction as a child to an immunization. I have taken synthroid and insulin since I was 9 years old. A year ago, for the first time, I started having problems feeling hypo, and my T3s were low. I tried Armour Thyroid -- this did not work for me. They couldn't stop the incessant itching and thought-racing (which I had never experienced before)even when we tried another brand. (Something weird is that my T3 levels remained low even when we went to the Armour Throid!) My doc suggested going back to Synthroid until I could get back into balance and then we could consider something else. It has been a few months. I am wondering: 1) How iodine affects synthroid levels with Hashimoto's Disease (in addition to low T3s in the last year I also developed fibrocystic breasts) and 2) what you would recommend at this point???
Based on the litle bit of information provided, I can tell you I am a big believer in Iodine for fibrocystic breasts and uterus. There is a lot of misinformation about the quantity preached by mainstream medicine, whereas they like to recommend micrograms as opposed to milligrams. As far as how iodine affects Synthroid, I can't explain it but take a look at my Blog and review some of the articles I have written about the thyroid and iodine to help educate yourself. The fact that Armour gave you some symptoms does not necessarily mean it is bad for you....a lot of the time...your body is Re-adjusting to what is going on and many of the symptoms that come during that re-adjustment make people believe it is wrong or not helping. Again, with the little information provided, i might try and work with your doctor, providing he knows something about 'healing' which makes me question that because he is recommending a synthetic thyroid medication instead of understanding the benefits of Armour or any other natural thyroid hormone that provides both T-3 and T-4, instead of a synthetic version of T-4 that your body may or may not recognzie.
Don't forget your body could have also reached a point of toxicity of that synthetic thyroid hormone, which your liver and kidneys are having a hard time with. Let's also not forget something to think about that you didn't mention, which is Anti-bodies to your thyoid. Have they tested for that, because that is common with Type 1 diabetes and Hashmitos Diesease.
Hope that helps, let us know if we can be of any other help or if you want to bounce more thougts as to what to do for your health.
