tjc, I am a fan of creatine and DHEA, especially the creatine if you are doing weight training or other high intensity sports training. I would probably add glutamine to my creatine protocol, because so many people don't have enough glutamine to support muscle growth and maintain the integrity of their digestive system. I say that because so many of my patients seem to have digestive issues, especially my fitness athletes who are swallowing more protein (milk) which seems to bloat them out and irritate their digestive system, which requires more glutatmine for the gut, instead of for the muscles. As far as DHEA...it is great if your DHEA levels are low. If not, I would only use them for a short spurt or periodically...otherwise you could be throwing your whole hormonal (adrenal) system out of whack. THe fact that you are 47, says you might be low, but with all the good eating, sleep and exercise...it could be to close to call without testing....see Testing to learn more about that. Also, if you do use DHEA....sublinguals are the best, stay away from the ones you have to swallow. Blessings, Dr. Len

Hello Dr. L! First of all, thanks for all of your advice. You mention that hormones are huge factor in losing weight and my question is, how can we tell if you the body is burning fuel from carbs, protein, or our stored fat? I am exercising regularly, eating small amount 5-6 times per day mostly of steam veggies, egg whites, and complex carbs and trying to the lose the last 15 lbs has been the biggest challenge I am facing. I am female at 5'2 weighing 130lbs. Please help. Thanks!

LoseitAll, Sometimes those last 10-15 pounds are the hardest to lose, especially if you are not doing everything right. What I mean is that you are missing something. Have you used the "online Health Quizzes" to see if your metabolism is burning fats or muscle? Maybe your blood sugar isn't helping you, maybe....something I see so often is over-training. This is where measuring your Adrenal glands with the Adrenal Stress Profile may let us see if you are overproducing cortisol and adrenaline, which tells your body to burn carbs and muscle instead of fats. Let me know if I can be of help and sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. Dr. Len
